Artist Statement

Spaces are living entities. They have histories and stories (Ge-schichten). Space is my primary resource for my sculptural installations. I interpret its materiality, its history, and its absences, from which my material explorations emerge. What I use, how I shape, what I work with: space is the foundation. Whilst most works are created as site-specific pieces, they can generate new tensions in various spaces.

My installations are adaptive and modular. They highlight the apparent contradiction between exchangeability and originality: just as a floor covering is mass-produced yet must be adapted to each individual space, the modules become specific objects through their particular context.
I am interested in what spaces assert and how this assertion is constructed. In doing so, I employ architectural, domestic and industrial aesthetics and negotiate an ambivalence between value and materiality. Sometimes I use found materials and deconstruct them. At other times, however, I also translate materials into the language of the existing space. In both cases, I respond to what is already there. What appears to have a function no longer serves one in the finished work.

Spaces are never neutral and refuse to remain blank. Through their spatial presence and large scale, the works invite physical engagement and suggest that spaces speak – and are heard, read and reinterpreted by those who move within them.

Caught between playfulness and menace, between architectural intervention and fragile materiality, my works are simultaneously precise spatial analyses and ephemeral interventions.
